I originally put the Chicco Keyfit 30 on our baby registry because it was the easiest one to install. I didn’t really think about traveling any where when we were expecting our first child. I just picked something that was safe and easy to install. So we lucked out that this car seat also happens to be super easy to travel with as well.
First, this car seat is FAA approved! If you want to buy your infant a seat on the airplane, this is a great car seat to use. You are unable to use the base, but it is really very easy to secure the car seat using the lap belt. The car seat has to be at the window seat though. The one tricky thing about the lap belt is that you have to pull the infant straight up from under the armpits, which is hard when you have a sleeping infant and you want to grab them from underneath.
We’ve also taken the Keyfit to Puerto Rico and England. We brought along the base to Puerto Rico because they use the Latch System in their cars and I felt more comfortable getting a better installation of the car seat with the base. But not to worry, the base isn’t really that heavy nor bulky compared to other infant car seats. While we were in England we left the base at home because Europe uses a totally different car seat system. Be familiar with seat beat installation and always look up your car’s manual to see how you can lock the seat belt in place.
Overall, we really loved this car seat when our children were infants. It made things really easy to travel because it’s pretty light and we were so familiar with installation, not to mention our children were just so used to their car seat. If you plan on traveling with your baby, I highly recommend adding this car seat to your registry.
